Coping With Loss

Dealing with loss in any form is never easy.  But there comes a time when we all must say good bye.  For most of us the loss of our pet's is no less difficult than the loss of family and friends.  We tend to become extremely attached to our pet's.  They offer unconditional around the clock love, companionship and support.  Their loyalty to us is never ending. If you are struggling with the loss of your pet, there is a wonderful web site you can go to for support and helpful information.  The site is www.petloss.com

Rainbow Bridge

Oh, when we get to Heaven
We hope that we will find
The souls that once we loved
Who left us all behind.

Some left us at the right time
They left this world in peace
Others left too sudden
Without the chance to say Goodbye, they were gone before We had the chance to even cry.

There's a special place for Grownups. A special place for kids
Me? I'll be on the other side
The side called Rainbow Bridge.

Across the dark green meadow
A'top the hills I'll run.  Where the Colors from the rainbow
Glitter from the sun.

And there I'll find my sweetheart
Running fast toward me in my arms Where he belongs for all eternity.

Jean McColgan

The Creation

When God had made the earth and Sky the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
The fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last he'd finished
Not one was quite the same.  He Said, "I'll walk this world of mine
And give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide
And everywhere He went, a little Creature followed Him
Until it's strength was spent.

When all were named upon the Earth and in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me."

Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to Front and called you dog, My friend."

Personal Stories of Loss

Heidi's Story

My brother was diagnosed with an incurable illness and was unable to work and so was home every day all alone.  I took him to the humane society to see if we could find him a pet to help with the lonely days he now faced.  He found a cocker spaniel who he named Heidi.  She was a wonderful companion for him.  My brothers illness progressively got worse and he was not able to take care of Heidi anymore.  I had told him I would take her when that time came and so I did.  My brother was put in the hospital and then a nursing home for a short time at that point we knew he wasn't going to be with us much longer.  It was his wish to pass away at his home and so myself and our other brothers and sisters took him home and took care of him.  Heidi was there every day and could be found laying on the floor beside his bed.  My brother passed away Christmas day 1999 with his family and Heidi beside him. It was three months later I had to have Heidi put to sleep from a tumor she had developed.  I had her cremated and we put her ashes with my brother at the cemetery.

The Life Of Dreyfus

Dreyfus was a puppy of our golden retriever we had decided to keep. Dreyfus was raised on the farm and his days consisted of swimming in the ditches and pond and helping with the irrigating.  It was the perfect life for a dog. He had acres and acres to run and did so every day. He eventually developed hip dysplasia and it was harder for him to get around.  Although he still insisted on coming with you.  I had decided to take a walk of an evening.  Dreyfus and I walked down the dirt road and then down the path along the highland ditch.  It was absolutely beautiful there and Dreyfus had spent many days swimming in the ditch.  I decided to cross to the bridge to the other side and Dreyfus jumped in and started to swim across which he had done many times. I had gotten across when I had an uneasy feeling about Dreyfus.  I looked down and he was swimming across just fine but I noticed his back end was starting to go side ways.  I realized the current was carrying him.  I cannot explain the fear that rushed through me.  I turned to talk to him and he was gone.  It happened that fast.  He was washed down a probable 10 ft. run off.  I was screaming and was heard by my husband and kids.  They came and my husband also being a firefighter did CPR on Dreyfus but was unable to save him.  I can not tell you the pain and guilt I felt for months after that.  I know he had a wonderful full life of 13 years on the farm.  We buried him along the ditch under a beautiful big shade tree.
