Pets and Christmas
Dr. Hartwig, DVM. Tender Loving Care Animal Hospital
Christmas can be a time for over-indulgence as well as mischievous indulgence for our furry companions and ourselves. We often underestimate how sensitive our pets are to changes in their environment. New smells in the house either from trees, ornaments, foods, or people. Ingestion of candy, notably chocolate, bones, and tinsel (cats) can be some of the holiday emergencies. Thinking ahead and not underestimating your curious furry companion(s) can help avoid some of these problems. Keep candy and garbage out of reach and keep tinsel and strings put away. Also, remember that overfeeding our pets to share the holiday spirit can create problems as well, so do not be too generous. While it is true baker's chocolate can cause serious side effects in dogs and cats, milk chocolate is less potent and they have to eat a lot more to have the same serious problems. Ingestion of milk chocolate and wrappers will likely produce vomiting and diarrhea. However, this depends on the size of the animal and the amount of chocolate ingested, so always call your veterinarian, an animal emergency center, or poison control for guidance. People may think feeding their dogs sugar-free candy is good but recent literature sites the sweetener, xylitol, may be linked to liver failure in dogs and has also caused a sudden drop in blood sugar which could cause depression and seizures. Since Christmas is the time of giving, puppies and kittens are often given as presents to children. While intentions are good the chaos of the holidays does not always allow for a great start with the new furry addition. Small breed puppies can often be more labor intensive as they need to eat very frequently to prevent their blood sugar from dropping to low. This can be frustrating with all of the holiday excitement and commitments. In summary, the holidays impact our furry companions as much as they do us, so be aware and prepared to decrease holiday stresses on everybody.
Meet the new aupairs

' I am excited to be able to work with Linda and am looking forward to serving your amazing pets! Paw au Pair is a special business, very personal yet professional. After meeting with Linda, I realized that she has done a remarkable job building up her company. I am anxious to serve you and your pets by fulfilling your needs to your individual satisfaction and by keeping to the high standards of Paw au Pair. I grew up in the country suburbs of Minneapolis where dogs, horses, and cats were part of our family.. After college I spent about 10 years in Santa Fe, New Mexico and then 12 years on the east coast of Florida before moving to Longmont 9 years ago. Due to the moving around, I have had several careers...high school art teacher, interior decorating consultant, property management and commercial real estate leasing. When my two children were born, I decided to become a stay- at-home mom. Now that they are in high school and college, I decided to venture out and found Paw au Pair a perfect fit. I have always cherished animals of all shapes and sizes and know I will enjoy helping bring a bit of fun into their lives as a pet sitter. "

Hi, my name is Dawn Stark. I’ve lived in Longmont for about 18 years. I’m married and have a son who is almost 12. We share our home with 2 cats and 2 dogs. “Kohl” is our Black Lab, and is a big baby. “Budd” is our MinPin Pomeranian mix, and he is quite the little character. “Captain” is our Orange Tabby, and he is very affectionate. “Murphy” is our Black Tabby, and he is the newest addition to our family. He seeks attention only on his own terms. I have worked for two different animal hospitals here in Longmont, as well as volunteering at the Boulder Humane Society and the Boulder Valley Spay Clinic. I just love animals, what can I say except I can’t wait to meet yours!
    Jenna Mcginnis
Hi! My name is Jenna McGinnis. I have just recently started working with Linda Heil, but have had a passion for animals my entire life. I grew up in Berthoud, Colorado and graduated from Berthoud High School in 2003. I now live in Longmont and am currently employed full time with a law firm called Jorgensen, Motycka, & Lewis P.C. I am a legal assistant to the criminal attorney and have hopes to pursue this career further. To help save money for college I have enlisted in Linda’s pet-sitting service. My goal is to help Linda provide loving, quality animal care to her clients.
